About Us

After years in South Beach Miami FL, Chef Joe Monteiro decided to migrate back up north and cross the sea to Martha’s Vineyard.  Driven by challenge, he took the executive chef position at the Atlantic Fish and Chop House in Edgartown in 2011.  With his extensive kitchen background, plethora of food knowledge and managerial style, he propelled the restaurant to instant success.  

Joe ran the Atlantic kitchen for several years, but he was hungry for more.  In 2016, Joe partnered with John Clift and Chad and Michelle Verdi, and together they started Wash Ashore Beer Company

In July of 2017, Joe gave the island what it really craved, a true Oyster Bar!  In an intimate space located just off Main Street in downtown Edgartown, Joe had a vision.  After lots of hard work and of course countless Wash Ashore beers, Joe created 19 Raw Oyster Bar.  When you step inside, you will be met with an authentic, fresh, and casual vibe.  From reclaimed wood, to industrial accents and Edison lightbulbs, it is warm and welcoming.  The front and side patios are perfect for enjoying the summer weather while having a wide selection of New England oysters and hand-crafted cocktails.  The menu doesn’t stop at oysters though, 19 Raw offers items to please any palate.  From fresh salads to a hearty filet, it will appease most anyone’s hunger needs.  Swing on by and say hi.  While you may be lucky enough to catch his gentle giant, Maya Mae (a 150 lb Neapolitan mastiff), you will likely find Joe cooking up a storm…and always smiling.

19 brand has grown from 19 Raw Oyster Bar (Est. 2017) to 19 Prime Cast Iron Steakhouse (Est. 2021), and now our newest endeavor, 19 Events! We would like to help take your event to the next level by adding some local charm. Hire us for a catered dory boat raw bar serving local seafood and items from our restaurant or rent our 1948 Wash Ashore Beer Tap Truck to pour some local brews, and finally, wow your guests with a stunning statement upon arrival - a custom champagne wall designed and built by a local designer and architect. Do it right, and hire all 3!
